Arcadio Castillo
Arcadio Castillo Diaz was born October 22 in Colon City, but he is a native Kuna. His childhood and adolescence was spent in the nature of the Kuna Yala archipelago.
To finish high school, he moves to the concrete jungle of Panama city, and in the decade of the 80’s obtains a fellowship to continue his studies in Russia, where he obtains a degree in ichthyology and pisciculture at the Astrajan Institute.
Currently he is the Scientific assistant at the BRS, and has worked at STRI since 1993. Arcadio also works for the Environmental Science Program (ESP) taking daily or weekly data of coastal marine environments (mangroves, sea grasses and corals); maintains the aquaria system for the public outreach program and is one of the most experienced divers at the Institute, with extensive knowledge of the marine ecosystems. He advises the General Kuna Congress, the NGO Balua Uala in Kuna Yala and the Caribbean Conservation Corporation (CCC), on marine conservation.
