Bocas Del Toro Research Station Boat Policy

Due to drastically increased demand for boats at the Bocas del Toro Research Station we will implement the following policy starting June 1, 2012. It will no longer be possible for station visitors to have exclusive use of a boat during their visit or to sign up for boat use months ahead of time. Visitors who do not want to follow this policy and those wishing to have exclusive boat access can rent boats locally. The station personnel can assist with these arrangements.

  1. Sign-up sheets for boats will be made available 2 weeks before the week to be scheduled. You can find the sign-up sheets at Plinio’s Desk and online.
  2. Boats can be signed out for use in the Morning (7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.), Afternoon (1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.) or all day.
  3. With multiple users per boat it is now no longer possible to charge exactly for gas used. We have developed a fee schedule based on our data on average gas use for each boat over the last 3 years.
  4. If you use the boats in the Morning and return them after 1:00 p.m. you will be charged for a full day of use.
  5. Time to refuel the boats will be at 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Murray (the station boat mechanic) will not be available to dispatch before or after these times. If you request a special time for refuel the boats you will send a request to Murray for you to refill them yourself.
  6. Boat ride to Escudo de Veraguas, Peninsula de Valiente, Zapatilla Islands, Punta Vieja, Cayo Agua island, Popa North/East island and any place in Chiriquí Lagoon will pay fuel as well as the boat fee.
  7. Boats’ maintenance, VIPs, Workshop and any course will have priority and Gabriel will be in charge of booking the boats and assigning them for these special events. Gabriel will be posting events planned in advance in the calendar.
