Research Interests

My research interest is in relation to the stone or earthen features, such as mines, low relief carvings (“petroglyphs”), platforms, ditches, groups of sculpted and un-sculpted stone columns, dry stone walls, stone and cobble pavements, and stone and earthen circles and mounds. I recently initiated a research project in the Gran Coclé culture area of central Panama whose long-term goal is to estimate the size, antiquity and social transformations of cultural/political units (“territories”) in this seminal area for pre-Columbian chiefdom research in relation to the exploitation of the natural resources.

I combine traditional archaeological field approaches with a GIS methodology, which is a powerful tool for searching for patterns between archaeological field observations and landscape and environmental data acquired from remote sensing, cartography and non-anthropological disciplines

Current Research

I ´m creating a distribution map of archaeological deposits in the upper, middle and lower valleys of the Grande and Coclé del Sur rivers, establishing the inter-connectedness of these sites and their possible zones of influence, and taking into consideration not only field archaeological evidence, but also topographic and geographical features, such as paths, river courses, rock outcrops, and rock art. Moreover we are locating the catchment areas of important natural resources (marine resources like seashells, mines, etc…) and those areas appropriate for agriculture, which are in found proximity to each archaeological deposit in order to determine in which ways non-cultural features may have influenced human behavior and social interactions.
