Rural sociology, social forestry , environmental policy, environmental education and the history of natural history in developing countries.

Current Research

Peasant colonization of tropical forests. Industrialization and urbanization in the Panama Canal Watershed.
Fishermen, port development and protected marine coastal areas in the Caribbean entrance to the Panama Canal. Galeta Point Marine Laboratory, Colon.

The teaching of sciences in the republic of Panama.

The history of natural history in the Isthmus of Panama.


Scientific outreach.

Over 50 yearly lectures to civic, business and academic groups. Also frequent appearances in national and international radio and television programs, aimed at building bridges between STRI research and the larger Spanish speaking community in Panama and Latin America. Writes a monthly article in Epocas, the historical and cultural supplement of Panama city’s La Prensa daily on the naturalists who have discovered the biological diversity of the isthmus from the XVIII to the XX century.
