As visiting scientists contribute new ideas and skills to STRI, they also benefit from the expertise of resident scientists and enjoy access to secure field stations.
In 2013, STRI hosted 1,342 visiting scientists from 408 institutions and 43 countries. These visitors place demands on the time and, in some cases, the resources of the staff. However, the benefits of a constant influx of scientists more than compensate for the costs.

Despite its relative geographic isolation, STRI remains a vibrant intellectual institution. The continuous stream of visiting research scientists is of crucial importance to the Institute, providing a better work environment for resident fellows and staff scientists.
