Permisos Científicos
El Instituto Smithsonian de Investigación Tropical (STRI) requiere que todo individuo que esté realizando investigaciones bajo los auspicios de STRI, se adhiera a las leyes y reglamentos pertinentes a la recolección, importación y exportación legal de especimenes científicos. Es el deber de cada investigador de STRI mostrar respeto por, y conocimiento de, las leyes de la República de Panamá, convenios internacionales (e.g., CITES), y leyes del país en donde las especimenes científicos están siendo importadas/exportadas. STRI mantiene una política de cero tolerancia con respecto al incumplimiento de los reglamentos y requisitos asociados a la recolección e importación o exportación de especimenes científicos. Hacer caso omiso de esta política de recolección, importación y exportación de STRI, resultará en la negación de acceso a las instalaciones de STRI, acción disciplinaria y posible despido.
Se debe contactar la Oficina de Visitantes de STRI con por lo menos dos meses de anticipación a las actividades de recolección, importación o exportación programadas, para recibir información respecto a las leyes panameñas pertinentes a cada tipo de proyecto. Es la responsabilidad de cada investigador solicitar información sobre las políticas de recolección, importación o exportación de otros países, de las autoridades responsables en cada país.
Favor de no solicitar ningún permiso sin antes haber completado nuestra Solicitud de Investigación.

Permisos
There are different permits needed for non-commercial purpose depending on the area in which collections will be made:
- Terrestrial Research Permit (Observation / Collection / Marking)
This needs to be obtained from Panama’s National Authority for the Environment (Autoridad Nacional del Ambiente, ANAM), and it is processed through STRI.
Request Permit - Export / Import Permits for Terrestrial Species
This needs to be obtained from Panama’s National Authority for the Environment (Autoridad Nacional del Ambiente, ANAM) and Ministerio de Desarrollo Agropecuario (MIDA) through STRI.
Request Import Permit
Request Export Permit - Marine Collecting Permit
This is a blanket permit for all investigators under STRI’s auspices. Please obtain a copy from your facility manager before embarking on a collecting trip. For collection of CITES species and/or inside national parks and protected areas, read Point 5. - Export / Import Permit for Marine Species
This needs to be obtained from the Department of Marine Resources through STRI

Request Marine Export Permit - CITES, National Parks and Protected Areas Permit
This also needs to be obtained from Panama’s National Authority for the Environment (Autoridad Nacional del Ambiente, ANAM), whether collection is of terrestrial or marine species. It is processed through STRI.
Request Collecting Permit
Request Export Permit - BCNM (Barro Colorado Nature Monument) Export Permit
This is required for collection/export made in Barro Colorado Nature Monument.
Request Barro Colorado Export Permit - Paleoecology/Paleontology
Permit needs to be obtained from the Mineral Resources Dept./Ministry of Commerce and Industries, and/ or INAC –Instituto Nacional de Cultura, through STRI.

This research requires coordination with the Indigenous Affairs Dept./Ministry of the Interior and notification to the Ministry of Foreign Relations, through STRI. *Additional ANAM permit may be required.

Research within this area for scientific observation or research is considered sensitive and is obtained through STRI. *Additional ANAM permit is required. See requirements
