I have worked on many aspects of calyptraeid biology over the past 30 years. My work has included studies of larval metabolic physiology, capacity for delayed metamorphosis, effects of delayed metamorphosis and short-term food deprivation on post-metamorphic development, relationship between food limitation and velar lobe size in larvae, influence of larval dispersal on the ability of populations to adapt to local environmental conditions (pollution), relationship between reproductive pattern and effects of inbreeding, vulnerability of larvae to predation, impact of low salinity on conditions within brood chambers, signal transduction pathways controlling metamorphosis, effect of sex-change reproductive pattern on mate choice, and the adaptive benefits of multiple paternity.

Currently we are completing a study of how low-salinity exposure during larval development affects post-metamorphic performance, working with 3 species from 3 continents. This summer we are continuing our work on signal transduction pathways controlling metamorphosis, and are initiating a detailed study of intertidal physiology for Crepidula fornicata. In association with Dr. Oscar Chaparro (Chile), I will also be determining over the next several years the extent to which stressful conditions experienced by embryos in brood chambers result in latent effects after metamorphosis.
