The Migramar network of marine research and conservation organizations held their most recent meeting at STRI, attended by 10 scientists representing Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama and the United States. Migramar, founded by 16 scientists in 2006, carries out the scientific research necessary to safeguard healthy populations of marine migratory species in the Eastern Pacific Ocean (www.migramar.org, https://www.facebook.com/migramar/). Among other activities, Migramar employs cutting-edge technologies (satellite and ultrasonic transmitters) to describe how fish, sharks, turtles, manta rays, sea birds and whales move and use the open ocean as a habitat in the region from Mexico to Chile and including all offshore islands and archipelagos such as Clipperton, Cocos, Galapagos, Malpelo, and Revillagigedo. The connectivity revealed by these findings underscores the importance of developing transboundary conservation initiatives and informing marine policy and management efforts across the Eastern Pacific. Migramar is also building research capacity by creating a platform for emerging Latin American scientists and other international collaborating organizations.
